PROM ATTENDEES – BEWARE!

Prom season for year 2011 is just around the corner. Recently, we are seeing students with their parents shopping for prom dresses and gowns. Phone has also been ringing for rental tuxedo inquiries.

Here at L’amour Bridal Boutique, we take pride in strictly following our prom policies. When a prom attendee purchase a gown or dress from us, we enter it into our prom registry. This means that if you are attending a prom to one of our Maui High Schools and purchased a dress or gown from our boutique, no one else in that particular school will have the same exact dress. We will not sell it in a different color nor in a different fabric once that particular style is registered in that High School. This policy applies to all purchases made such as, in-store stock purchase, catalog and special/custom orders as well as rental tuxedos. There are other bridal salons and other department stores that tried to copy our prom policy but have not honored this policy due to lack of enforcement from their corporate offices as well as lack of integrity.

So, prom customers…

BEWARE  of  COPY CATS!

Also, there are other important things to know when it comes to purchasing a prom out fit. If you have already looked at all the possible places and can’t find the exact (or at least similar) style you fell in love from magazines and catalogs you looked at, consider special ordering it as soon as possible. It is very important to know that if you have to special or custom order a prom gown/dress, it normally takes three (3) and up to four (4) months to arrive with normal delivery.  Although, if you have to ultimately special or custom order a prom dress/gown, keep in mind that rush, plus-size, shipping and alteration fees on orders are separate fees.  “Having a beer budget on a champagne taste” is what most people/customer tend to do. Be aware of what you need, compared to what you want. Make sure you budget wisely and appropriately with time and finances to avoid disappointments.

To get the dress/gown you really want, shop early. Not only that you’ll have the best selection to choose from at L’amour Bridal Boutique, you will also have the first choice of registering your dress/gown purchased for your school.  So, there’s no need to worry about someone else wearing the same dress at your prom party if you shop at L’amour Bridal Boutique. Your party dress needs to show you’ve arrived!

No need to fear, L’amour Bridal is here

Hurry… check out the new arrivals and latest dresses in style we have at L’amour Bridal Boutique… just for you!

Sample Sale Update

Saturday, January 29th 2011 was a great success! Not only that we have taken orders for prom tuxedo rentals and assist on prom gowns/dresses, we have also seen future brides come in and help them with their fitting and decision making process with their purchases.

It was great to see friends and loyal customers bring in their friends with them to support our cause and partnering with Women Helping Women organization.
Indeed a busy, fun and exciting day for everyone especially, helping to find customers with the right formal wear that suits their needs. We felt very excited helping out the young and first time prom goers. Their youthful taste and queries, made us more energetic towards the end of the day. Although challenging, it was very refreshing!

All in all, it was a great amount of customers who came in and made some purchases to help out in raising funds for Women Helping Women organization and L’amour Bridal Boutique‘s First Sample Sale Event.

Many Mahalos to those who came out for the event and gave their support to one of our non-profit agencies here on Maui, Women Helping Women.

Choosing Outfits that suits your Skin Tone & Hair Color

First impression; as the old saying goes… is very important to make. People are undeniably vain whether we admit it or not. Whether applying for a job or attending a typical social gathering, we always feel like dressing up to the max or at least be presentable. It is in our nature that we naturally want to look better, if not good for ourselves but to others as well. Hence the invention of mirror. As the world progress, not only that we are able to see ourselves in mirrors with what we are putting on, but also able to foresee possibilities of new color, design and styles with the new technology. Prior to making decisions on any possible changes, we have a massive wealth of information that we can easily extract not only from literature but also on the internet in this day and age. Though, we have to admit that certain things must be consulted to professionals in person; who specializes in their fields and not just relying on the information that is easily accessible out there especially, when it comes to your image. The reason why you have to see these professionals in person is because of what we call “body chemistry”.

YES! That is Science and this time, we are talking with scientific background issues particularly in Chemistry.

Have you noticed that certain fragrances smells better on certain individuals than others? The reason is because our bodies emit different natural scents according to what we put in it, and when a foreign scent is applied to it; the mixture of the two changes the make up of the original scent. Hence complicating the idea of purchasing it for someone else besides self purchase. This is why you must test fragrances on you before buying it for you!

The same applies to shades of cosmetics. Your skin pigmentation changes the shades of colors when applied to your skin. That is the reason why you must have a make-over done before making any purchases.

Another reason why you should have a color swatching done on you, a service  which is available to our customers here at L’amour Bridal Boutique is because you need to know which color group is mostly complimentary to your skin tone and hair color. You do not want those dark circles around your eyes looking obvious, don’t you? Vain or not vain?A question, worth taking a look at seriously if you are worried enough on how you project yourself out there.

Take a good look at the following pictures below. Lighting and background has not been changed but the color swatches. Do you see the difference?

The top photo with the warmer tones make the skin tone look warmer and the blouse look more ivory than white.

This bottom picture is showing cooler tones making the skin look healthier against the dark hair and the blouse looking whiter than ivory.

If you can’t see the difference,  then you must be color blind. Please consult an eye doctor.

The above issues are very good reasons why you must consult in person and not just read about it.

Previously, L’amour Bridal Boutique has talked about what to expect on fittings knowing the different body silhouettes to make better decisions in choosing the right outfit. This time, we have to consider the different shades of colors in addition to what you already know. When you know the right silhouette and colors to wear, it will not matter whether you are the center of attention or the focal point. You will be noticed!!! There are four (4) major groups of colors and two (2) color tones/intensity to explore and determine which shades of color an individual belongs to. First and foremost, is you need to find out which color tones you belong to. Are you in the Cool Tone or Warm Tone? Next step, is determining which group of colors most compliment your skin/hair color. Is it  SRING, SUMMER, FALL or WINTER? In general, people with artistic, color and design backgrounds are the one’s we need to consult to help us guide in the right direction especially when it comes to projecting the right or certain image. A wardrobe consultant here at L’amour Bridal Boutique and a make-up artist are the most accessible and inexpensive professionals to consult with rather than seeing an image consultant who would normally charge you by the hour.

As a consumer, we make choices according to what looks good in the window display or perhaps on the magazine or what a Hollywood personality is wearing. Sometimes, our purchasing decisions tend to be influenced by what is trendy in fashion industry as well. Besides it all, once you determine which group of colors you belong to; you should stay within those range of colors. Unless you decide to change your hair color and/or tan line, then you must also be prepared to change your entire wardrobe color other than neutral colors. It doesn’t matter whether you are wearing casual outfits or formal attire, you should keep things complimentary to your shape and color. When you are wearing the right silhouette for your body, the right shade of colors for your skin tone and hair color, you can be confident that someone will take notice of how you carry yourself. You should carry the dress (fashion/style) and not the dress (style/fashion) carry you!

Knowledge is power… and when you are feeling powerful with this knowledge in fashion, you can go out there and show your fashion confidence. Let there be style!

Fitting Expectations

There is a false belief that when a customer places a rental order, the garments that he/she has chosen to rent and wear should fit them “like a glove”, especially when the customer has provided sizes and measurements. Not true! Providing measurements and/or sizes merely gives the renter an idea of what size the customer should fit in the universal sizing scale, which is commonly used by the rental business industry. This false belief can sometimes be applied to purchase garments only, but never on rental garments. We say sometimes – because for most of us,  we have not developed a naturally proportioned body silhouette. When you have not-so-perfect body parts, you shouldn’t expect it to fit perfectly. In most cases, you will have to pay additional alteration expense(s) for having outfits altered to custom fit them according to your body’s shape/type/form. A very good example of this “almost expected expense”, is for petite sizes. You are most likely to have to shorten the length of either your top or bottom… or worst, both garments if petite sizing is not available. This is more likely to happen on most ready-to-wear stores that does not offer petite sizing scale.  If possible, we recommend to find a store that carries this sizing scale (if you are in this scale) to  avoid having the hassle of waiting to get your outfits altered before you could wear them, as well as having to pay additional alteration fees with your purchased clothing. Though with rentals, this is not a big problem. All sizing scale is available from short to extra long length.

Another popular issue that we have to tackle is having a longer or shorter torso. Need not ask which part of your body but generally speaking, this should be easy to figure out. Obviously if this is your case, all you need to do is lengthen or shorten certain part(s) of the garment(s) where it will match to your body’s height or length. With this said, a little common sense should do.

How about seriously taking a look at the different body silhouettes so everyone will have a clear understanding on fitting expectations when it comes to renting or purchasing an outfit? There are five(5) major shapes to consider.

A.) V-shape – This shape is particularly more significant for males and athletes. They tend to have proportionally smaller buttocks, narrow waist line, bigger chests and wider shoulders, which makes for a V-shape upper torso, hence the new term of “athletic” shape/cut.

This shape will most likely have to take-in the mid-section of the garment or take a larger top for a two-piece outfit.

B.) Hourglass shape – This shape particularly pertains to the female body, which is significantly narrower in both the front view and profile view than their male counterpart. The waist is narrower than the chest region due to the breasts, and narrower than the hip region due to the width of the buttocks. Thus, resulting the hourglass shape.

This shape tends to have a very minimal alteration(s) done (if any), but will most likely not have to do any adjustments at all.

C.) Diamond shape – Generally,  the middle region of the body is wider than the upper and lower section of the body.

This shape will most likely have to let out the mid-section of the garment and/or take a bigger size to accommodate the widest part of the body and take-in the rest of the areas for better fit.

D.) Pear or spoon or bell shape – Mainly with females, the hip section or lower part of the body is wider than the upper body.

This shape will most likely have to take-in the upper body for better fitting garment or take a smaller top for a two-piece outfit.

E.) Rectangle or straight or banana shape – The shoulder, waist, and hip sections are relatively similar.

Except for the mid-section, this shape will most likely have to take-in the upper section and lower section of the garment.

For more in depth information on the above topic, please go to the following link  at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_shape.

Photo illustrations were researched at beafunmum.com and lareineetsaministredesmodes.com.

Besides the rich and simplistic approach to this topic, we would like to add two more things that people tend to forget; age and our genetic make-up. This is particularly important to remember when you have children with mixed race, not to mention – children who are over-fed. Children sizes can be summed up to two different categories. First, being oddly taller for his/her age and secondly, being unusually wider or bigger for his/her age or having both issues. Adding to the fact, is having to figure out which torso is longer or shorter?…and when you include the fact that they are still growing and not fully developed in certain parts, makes difficult high expectations on rental fittings in this equation.

One topic that a lot of people does not want to or avoid to talk about is weight change. Whether your goal is losing or gaining some weight, it should be realistic. The most common goal that we hear from both brides and grooms (or anyone from a wedding party) is losing weight. With this in mind (especially if you are a bride), you should have your alterations done at least a month before the wedding. Your weight will be the closest to where you want to be. Also, giving ample time for the alteration(s) to get done before the wedding date. This will not only save the gown’s fabric from getting reopened so many times and weakened or frayed, but will also save you money on separate charges when you have to return for multiple adjustments work done. For the groom, we hear a lot of losing weight by “working out at the gym.” When you work out or lift weights, muscle tend to harden and get bigger. Muscle do not liquefy or evaporate. So… losing two inches in a month or two  is not very realistic, unless you drastically change your food intake with your exercise regimen.

Here at L’amour Bridal Boutique, not only that we are driven by our passion to help you achieve your best look in your most important event in your lifetime, but to also educate our followers and clientele to help them make better decisions with their purchases and rental orders.
